Facebook is labeling the silencing of yet another conservative voice as “a mistake” after their removal of Candace Owen’s post about “liberal supremacists” and facts about poverty. Facebook suspended Owen’s account after her post, which talked about the poverty rates in single mom-run homes.
Candace Owens is the founder of the conservative Blexit movement, which encourages black Americans to embrace conservative principles and ditch the Democratic Party. Her suspension came after a single post; Facebook suspended her for a week after they stated that her post about liberal supremacists and the failure of liberal policies to help the black community. The social media brand said that her post violated their standards and shut down her account without warning.
Owens then posted to President Trump on Twitter:
“Dear [President Donald Trump], my page has been suspended for 7 days for posting that white supremacy is not a threat to black America, as much as father absence and & liberal policies that incentivize it, are,” she tweeted Friday. “I am censored for posting the poverty rates in fatherless homes.”
Facebook initially simply informed Owens about the ban, and had no answer for her as to why her post was not appropriate or why they chose to take it down. Once Owens when to Twitter and made it public, however, the social media giant began frantically backpedaling. Facebook has come under fire for everything from privacy violations and data collection to banning or blackballing conservatives, so this action is nothing new. What is new is the response from Facebook.
Once Owens posted to President Trump, other users began to chime in on Twitter, turning up the heat and drawing attention to Facebook’s long standing prejudice and bias against conservative voices.
As users began to read, share and respond to Owens’ tweet and her followup comments, the suspension began to get more attention from the media. She followed up with the tweet to President Donald Trump and then continued:
“Facebook has allowed every post that has falsely and horribly accused @realDonaldTrump of white supremacy to remain on its platform.
But when a black woman begins discussing the TRUTH—which is that liberal policies have systematically ruined black homes—they censor.
Unfair!”
Owens was interviewed by Breitbart News, and detailed her belief that the silencing of conservative voices, individuals and opinion is directly tied to the attempt to muffle support for President Trump as we draw closer to the 2020 elections.
“They are now actively censoring and deplatforming voices that they feel will assist him in 2020,” added Owens. “They view me as a threat to their Party because I am — I am waking up black America to the lies and devastation that liberal policies have unleashed into our community.”
Once news media agencies began asking Facebook for comments on Owens’ suspension, the brand refused comment, then stated that the suspension was “a mistake” and restored her account. No further comments or actions were taken.
