Overwhelming Majority of Americans Oppose Lieberman-Warner Global Warming Proposal, New Poll Suggests

May 28, 2008

Clinton, McCain and Obama at Odds With 90%+ of Americans

Washington, D.C. – Just as the U.S. Senate is poised to vote on the Lieberman-Warner America’s Climate Security Act (S. 2191), a new poll finds an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the higher energy costs that Lieberman-Warner would impose.

The poll, conducted by the Public Opinion and Policy Center of the National Center for Public Policy Research, found that 65% of Americans reject spending even a penny more for gasoline in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The number rejecting raising gas prices in an effort to combat global warming has increased by 17 percentage points — or 35% — in just over two months. The National Center conducted a similar survey in late February. Read more

Considering Putting Your Land In Conservation Easement? Read On

May 27, 2008

Placing land in a conservation easement seems to be growing in popularity, especially with a troubled economy and rising property taxes. Sometimes these easements can give a landowner tax relief. What else can it give you? The following comes to us from the National Center for Public Policy Research. If you or someone you knows is considering doing this, they should make sure they completely understand all the ramifications that will affect them in the near and the long term. Read more

Two Very Dumb Things The Bush Administration Has Done This Year…..So Far

May 23, 2008

I was sitting here reading an article in the National Post by Kevin A. Hassett about the legal mess the Bush administration has gotten itself in over this decision to list the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. It wasn’t that Hassett wrote anything absolutely brand new but all the while I’m reading I’m thinking, “These guys are really stupid! What they did was plain dumb! What were they thinking?”

Hassett describes the decision by Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne as trying to have it both ways – meaning trying to keep those who think the polar bear is going away forever happy AND not let the decision have any bearing on the environment, i.e. global warming, etc. Read more

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, “Most Discredited, Fringe, Extreme Viewpoints”

May 22, 2008

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has decided the state will sue the U.S. Federal Government on its decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. In response to Gov. Palin’s announcement, this is the response from Kassie Siegel from the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the organizations suing the U.S. Federal Government to go further in its listing and declare that man made global warming is melting the sea ice and steps need to be taken to stop global warming.

As reported by the Associated Press:

“She’s either grossly misinformed or intentionally misleading, and both are unbecoming,” said Kassie Siegel of the Center for Biological Diversity. “Alaska deserves better.”

Siegel said it was unconscionable for Palin to ignore overwhelming evidence of global warming’s threat to sea ice, the polar bear’s habitat.

“Even the Bush administration can’t deny the reality of global warming,” she said. “The governor is aligning herself and the state of Alaska with the most discredited, fringe, extreme viewpoints by denying this.”

Governor Palin is a hero in my book and I applaud her efforts. I’m glad to have her on my side of the “discredited, fringe, extreme” viewers of global warming.

Hugh Hewitt also applauds Palin’s action.

Parody Of Ignorance

May 22, 2008

WellConsider this if you will. Fred owns a small farm. In the middle of his property he discovered he had a good source of water, water that he could use for his home and to water and care for what few animals he had on his farm.

A city dweller bought a lot of land next door to Fred and decided to build a home. The city dweller considered digging his own well but didn’t think it would look good and might be detrimental to the environment, so he worked out an agreement to buy his water from Fred.

On the other side of Fred, another buyer purchased a lot of land and built a house. This new buyer, being an acquaintance of the city dweller, also opted not to dig or drill his own well. Instead, he too bought his water from Fred. Read more

Polar Bear Population Guessing

May 21, 2008

Terence Jeffrey, Townhall.com, tries to piece together a puzzle on how polar bear populations are calculated. Perhaps calculated is the use of a word that too accurately describes what takes place.

Most of you who visit the Black Bear Blog often, know that I am, generally speaking, a defender of wildlife biologists. Their work is not easy to begin with and that work is often handcuffed by lack of funds, politics and a general disagreement from the general population of humans.

Jeffrey’s article takes a look at some of the history of making polar bear population estimates dating back as far as the 1950s. What he presents doesn’t give us a lot of hope that anyone really knows just how many polar bears there are or were. Read more

More Than 31,000 Scientists Disagree With Al Gore

May 19, 2008

Al Gore and Global WarmingI have for quite some time now offered the argument that only idiots and those with personal agendas would claim that anthropogenic global warming was “settled science”. At no time in history has intelligent man stopped discussing or studying scientific information in order to better learn and advance the scientific community. Why should climate change be any different?

Along came a politician who couldn’t win his home state in an election and began a campaign to convince the world we were all going to die if we didn’t make people stop creating carbon dioxide. And they followed in masses, ready to lay down everything in their lives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Read more

Perhaps Listing The Polar Bear Will Bring Much Needed Attention To The ESA

May 16, 2008

*Scroll for Updates*

Polar BearThere is one thing for certain. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne’s announcement yesterday that the polar bear will be listed as “threatened” has stirred the proverbial pot. It should have come as no surprise that regardless of what decision was made, it was going to be the wrong one to someone.

I want to take this opportunity to focus on a few comments made by Sec. Kempthorne, President Bush and others about listing the bear, the Endangered Species Act and the role the courts play in all this. Read more

Black Churches to Participate in Day of Prayer for Jailed Border Patrol Agents

May 9, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Project 21, the black leadership network, has recruited the support of black churches across the United States to participate in a special day of prayer declared by a member of Congress to call attention to the plight of incarcerated U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.

“To many Americans, the radical beliefs and comments of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright have come to falsely personify the Christian church – and particularly those with black congregations. We hope this show of support for the law and good government will help undo the damage he has wrought,” said Project 21 Chairman Mychal Massie. “This is a call upon our God to do what only He can in the absence of any action by President Bush. Christians have long bridged the divide between God and the absence of responsible leadership, and it is only fitting that once again the Church is undertaking to do that which officials will not.” Read more

President Bush Signs Heritage Area Bill Into Law

An Earmark + “K Street” Lobbyist = Massive Federal Land Grab

by David A. Ridenour

With his signature on May 8 to S. 2739, the ‘Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008,’ George Bush has now signed on to the establishment of de facto federal zoning along a 175-mile corridor running from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Charlottesville, Virginia. It’s one of the largest federal land grabs in history.

On April 29, the U.S. House of Representatives passed this massive, pork-laden bill that included a provision creating the Journey Through Hallowed Ground (JTHG) National Heritage Area. Debate was limited to just 40 minutes. Read more

Debate On Polar Bear A Reflection Of Skewed Societal Priorities

May 3, 2008

Polar BearA federal judge this past week told the Department of Interior it had until May 15, 2008 to make a decision on whether to list the polar bear as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. And the environmentalists went wild!!!

If you follow the link category to the right under “Endangered Species“, you’ll find plenty of articles and links to the ongoing debate about whether the polar bear is in danger, whether the world is in danger and if it’s all caused by anthropogenic (man-made) global warming from carbon dioxide.
